The Human Cost of July: A Visit to Shaheed Ahnaf's Family

b DIHAN Foundation had the privilege of visiting the home of Shaheed Ahnaf, one of the young lives lost during the July Movement. What we witnessed was not simply a family remembering a loved one it was a family learning to live with an absence that can never be filled. At just 17 years old, Ahnaf was taken from his parents, his brother, and everyone who loved him. The home that once echoed with laughter, excitement, and the joy of Eid now carries a profound silence. Every room, every memory, and every family tradition reminds them of the son and brother who is no longer there. During our visit, Ahnaf's family shared painful memories of the Eids they once celebrated together. His younger brother spoke about the moments they exchanged Eid greetings, shared laughter, and enjoyed the simple happiness of being together. His parents reflected on how Ahnaf's presence brought life and joy to their home. Today, those memories remain, but the person at the centre of them is gone. For Ahnaf's mother, Eid no longer feels like a celebration. The foods he loved, the traditions they cherished, and the excitement that once filled their home now serve as reminders of an irreplaceable loss. His father and younger brother described the heartbreak of attending Eid prayers without him, facing a reality they never imagined they would have to endure. The visit served as a powerful reminder that behind every martyr's name is a family whose lives have been changed forever. While the nation remembers the sacrifices made during the July Movement, families like Ahnaf's continue to carry that sacrifice every single day. DIHAN Foundation stands in solidarity with Shaheed Ahnaf's family and with all families who have lost loved ones. Their courage, resilience, and sacrifice must never be forgotten. As Bangladesh moves forward, we must continue to honour the memories of those who gave everything and ensure that the families they left behind are remembered, respected, and supported. Shaheed Ahnaf may no longer be with us, but his memory lives on in the hearts of his family, in the conscience of a nation, and in the story of a Bangladesh that must never forget its heroes.
